6th Grade News: 12/11 – 12/15/17

HUMANITIES
This week in History, we moved on from Mesopotamia and launched into our unit on ancient Egypt. We began, as we always do, by looking at carefully at maps and drawing inferences. Students discovered how geographical features like deserts and the Nile River shaped daily life so long ago. They considered, too, how geography and climate continue to impact our lives today.
In Literature class, students learned all about the literary term “Mood.” We analyzed mood across a variety of art forms, including video, pictures, and texts– and discussed how artists of all kinds intentionally convey particular moods. Students noticed that artists and authors use color, shapes, sound, lighting, symbolism, diction, and more in order to incorporate strong feelings into their pieces.
Lastly, we learned more Greek and Latin roots and studied some important comma rules this week. I’m looking forward to seeing how the students’ new knowledge of vocabulary and grammar enhances their writing.

Happy Hanukkah!

Naomi

JUDAICS
This week students have been working hard on their presentations for the Hero Convention next week. They chose from three amazing female heroes in Shemot. They studied the text surrounding their heroic moments and created Kushiyot (text based questions) to try to discover more about what was happening. They worked wonderfully in pairs, asking each other deepening questions and working to base their ideas in the text. They have created visual conversations to share on the 20th along with a piece of art that accompanies the conversation. We also began our Hanukkah unit. We learned from Mishna Baba Kama about how a store owner is not liable for damages caused by placing Hanukkah Candles outside of his store. Students learned the different scenarios when the store owner would and would not be liable for other types of light based fire damage. They acted out each scene and acted as lawyers for both the store owner and causer of damage, the camel. It was a great week and we had a wonderful time celebrating Hanukkah together!
Shabbat shalom and Happy Hanukkah,
Laura
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Class with Phyllis

The sixth graders have completed their parent guides for planning a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.  The guides include an explanation of what it means to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah as well as suggestions for the ceremony and celebration.  The guides come in a variety of forms, from packets to websites.  Please look out for these incredible projects at next Wednesday’s 6th grade hero exhibition.  For our next project each student will be writing a dvar Torah to be delivered in tefila sometime in the winter or spring.  Phyllis will send out an email with dates after break.

SCIENCE

This week, students reviewed and prepared for their end of unit assessment. However as we all have curious minds in science, they were allowed to conduct a sneak peek of an eighth grade experiment. Students enjoyed the chance to discover levels of sugar using testing solutions that change color when sugar is present. This gave them the opportunity to focus and improve proper laboratory procedures while enjoying their discoveries.

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week the students in HaKbatza Aleph practiced using the infinitive and the present tense of verbs in order to agree or disagree with someone. The students practiced these structures verbally, in writing, and online.

HaKbatza Beyt practiced various verbs in the present tense while studying about Bedouins in the desert.

I wish everyone Hag Hanukkah Sameach and Shabbat Shalom!
