6th Grade News: 11/13 – 11/17/17

MATH
In 6th grade math we are working on graphing linear equations. They are also learning how to understand what information the graph will give you. They have been working on plotting points and understanding all about the graph. Next week 6Y will have a quiz on graphing and then move on to fractions and decimals. The 6X class will continue to work on graphing linear equations and learn how to graph their own equation. Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

HUMANITIES:

This week in Humanities, students began their Wordly Wise vocabulary study using an online program. They are enjoying exploring new words through a digital platform, which allows them to share their work with others, access online flash cards, and receive immediate feedback on their answers.

In History class, students analyzed ancient art from the Assyrian Empire. They looked at famous wall reliefs depicting King Ashurbanipal hunting lions, and drew inferences about Assyrian culture and values based on this violent and impressive imagery. See pictures of these reliefs, which are now housed at the British Museum, at this link. We also began learning about cuneiform, the Mesopotamian written language. Students challenged themselves to guess the meanings of various cuneiform symbols and had fun drawing some of their own.

Finally, 6th graders practiced teamwork in advisory this week as they participated in the “Marshmallow Challenge.” In groups of two or three, students were tasked with supporting a marshmallow atop the tallest freestanding structure they could build. Each group could only use limited materials in their design, including dried spaghetti and a yard of string, and they had limited time to build. Through lots of trial and error, students learned about communication, compromise, and creative thinking. See some photos of our activity below!

Judaics

Saul:

“This week in Judaics we completed a paper called “commentary”. That is where we take Rabbi’s ideas about words from the text and translate them to learn what their opinion on the text is. Another thing we did this week was we continued the sheet you’ve been hearing about “Shemot 1 6-14” . Today we continued to work on Shemot 1 6-14 and we worked on it with our chavrutas. One of the  days in class the internet was not working so we worked on our Shemot text from a Chumash as a group and then we looked for kushyah (question)  from the text with our chavutas. We worked on creating better kushiot that help us dig deeper into the text.  A Kushiyah is a question about the text,  we shared it with our chevrutas and we  came up with possible answers to their question. The last day of the week in Judaics we made a study guide for our test on the 22nd  and then we worked on a singular and plural grammar packet.

Ps hi mom hi dad”

Shabbat Shalom,

Laura

SCIENCE:

Students continued their exploration of DNA by creating edible models. Students enjoyed working with different parts of DNA in order to understand the concept of base pair sequences. After this building activity, it was exciting to see students eat these DNA parts! We will continue to use these hands on activities next week to further our understanding of DNA and genetic traits.

HEBREW:

This week in Hebrew HaKbatza Aleph we continued to practice how we describe having pain or being sick and leading conversations with the doctor. Next week we will continue to explore this unit.

Students in HaKbatza Bet presented to their friends a neighborhood using slides. Next, we started discussing the difference between the different kinds of school.

I wish everyone a peaceful weekend,

Andreea

HERITAGE:
