5th Grade Week of 5/22

What a week! The sun is out, and we are winding down the year with a few more weeks to go! Please enjoy our classroom updates below, and have a lovely long weekend!

Mindfulness Advisory this week: Partner Yoga!

Humanities: This week in Humanities, we continued our book club unit, and explored elements of fantasy, themes, and the concept of friendship in fantasy books. We also concluded our essay portion of the China Museum project. Can’t wait to see everyone June 5th!-Tony

Math: This week, the fifth graders learned to express fractions as decimals, multiply and divide decimals by 10s, 100s, and 1000s. The unit test on decimals is likely to take place on Wednesday, June 13th. Have a great long weekend! –Kelly

ScienceStudents this week continued their space exploration with a discussion about how humans could live on Mars. What would be required to live on the planet? How would a colony on Mars be constructed? Then students constructed Mars colony models from their own scientific vision.-Mike

Judaics: “This week we finished our Shavuot unit by sharing our ideas behind the designs of our cheesecake. This was very fun and it was cool to see how everyone had a different design. We got back to our Joseph story. We translated the text and even learned to translate Rashi script. It was interesting to see what Rashi thought about the text. Some of us agreed with him and some didn’t agree with his opinion on what was happening. We learned about what will happen with Joseph’s brothers and if they will be trusted by Jacob to bring Benjamin to Egypt to rescue Shimon and survive the famine. We will continue a conversation next week about how to rebuild trust.”- Dahlia

Hebrew: This week students started taking a series of assessments in all 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. A similar assessment was taken at the beginning of the year, the results we receive will allow us to track students progress in all 4 skills. These tests do not impact the students grade on their progress reports but are very important so we can track each students progress from the begging of the year and from previous years and the MS as a whole.-Yehuda
