5th Grade Week of 4/30

IMG_8174What a week! The sun finally came out, spring is here, and so much happened in 5th grade! We had a wonderful time at Prospect Park during Lag Baomer, and enjoyed hosting our families for Kesher Day. We are also looking towards the end of the year, including preparing the students for health class. Please enjoy our classroom updates below, and have a good weekend!

HUMANITIES: Another successful week in Humanities! We began pre-reading for our fantasy book club unit, including reading classic fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm and interpreting their connections to other fantasy works to create a list of common elements within the fantasy genre. Students also continued working hard on their China Museum projects. Have a good weekend!-Tony

MATH: Fifth graders started a new unit on Decimals (unit 7) this week and are able to identify decimal place-values. The Standardized Tests are coming up (Tuesday, May 15th – Wednesday, May 16th) and will begin reviewing for the test from next week until the test days. Students should be bringing calculators (finally) to class that were asked of them at the beginning of school year.-Kelly

Judaics:

This week we finished our learning of the 4th Aliyah. We put together a really fun timeline of the history of Israel. Laura had us do a competition with the other class. We had to see who could put the timeline together the fastest. The challenge was that we couldn’t speak, it was really fun.  I thought the timeline was also really interesting

because it expand my knowledge of Israel before it became a state. It has been really fun to learn about this history in the way that we have. It was a fun challenge to put the timeline together and I also liked learning on my own with the packets. We received different people who were the founders of kibbutz Degania (The first Kibbutz). Each person was assigned to become the person they learned about. We went out to the yard and used each others skills to plan out what we would build and how the kibbutz would look like. I learned about how my character pushed through a lot of hard times like his leg problem and going into Syria to save people. A lot of people who founded the kibbutz really pushed through hard times and stuck with things. I think they could do this difficult thing because they saw how their crazy goal was going to impact the future of the state of Israel. They just bought a patch of land and built it up and now today there are so many kibbutzim because of them.

HEBREW:

5K
This week the class learned about two important Jewish artist, Mark Chagall and Boris Schatz.
Students read both of the biographies and learned about the artists contribution to Jewish art and to Israel.
After reading the biographies students had a reading comprehension on the material and looked for differences and similarities.-Yehuda

This week students read short texts and learned a series of words that have to do with daily routines at home and in school, they practiced changing the verbs to infinitives, drew comics with the words (based on the text) and learned a song called ” הצריך הזה” – by יהונתן גפן  ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EurO8dTkim0 ).
