5th Grade Week of 3/19

What a week! Our students continued to strive towards meeting their academic goals and gaining new knowledge. Our 5A students took their first trip of the year to the Brooklyn Autism Center and met some new and unique friends. Have a good and restful weekend!

HUMANITIES: Another successful week in Humanities! Students did an amazing job creating and administering their own activities in groups for our whole-class text. We continued learning about China, focusing on the Ming Dynasty and the era of exploration in medieval China. Have a good weekend!-Tony

JUDAICS:  This week we said goodbye to Dammara our wonderful student teacher. We began our Passover unit. We are learning how to sing the Passover Kiddush. Each student is responsible to sign off this blessing next week on Wednesday. They can practice with the recording posted on google classroom. We are also learning about the Four Children in the Torah text and midrash. We have already had some great conversations about the following questions.

  • Who are the personalities at our seder?
  • People learn differently.
  • We all have our areas of expertise.
  • How do you answer a question properly for the specific person?
  • Do you have all 4 personalities in different situations?

Shabbat Shalom –Laura

MATH

It was lovely seeing you at the conferences last week! This week, they learned and practiced to find the areas of rectangles, squares, and triangles. Unit 5: Perimeter, Area and Surface Area test is likely to take place on April 10th-11th. The topics of unit five is listed below.-Kelly

Unit Five: Perimeter, Area and Surface Area

  1. Square Units

    1. Find the area of a figure in square units.

    2. Recognize that the area of a triangle is half the area of a square or rectangle, sharing the same base and height.

    3. Find the shaded area of a figure.

    4. Recognize the base and height of a triangle.

  1. Rectangles and Squares

    1. Find the area of a composite figure by dividing it into squares and/or rectangles.

    2. Find the area of a composite figure by subtracting the area of the small square or rectangle from the area of the large square or rectangle.

    3. Find the area of composite figures.

    4. Practice finding area or perimeter of figures.

  1. Area of a Triangle

    1. Compare the area of a triangle with the area of its related rectangle.

    2. Identify that the area of a triangle is half the area of the rectangle sharing the same base and vertical height.

    3. Identify the height of given triangles related to the given base.

    4. Use the formula to find the area of triangles:

12 x base x height  or  base x height2

e. Realize that different triangles sharing the same base and height have the same area.

f. Find the area of a triangle with given base and height.

g.  Find the area of the shaded part of a rectangle by subtracting the area of triangles.

  1. Area of a Parallelogram

    1. Compare the area of parallelogram with the area of its related rectangle.

    2. Compare the area of a parallelogram with the area of two congruent triangles.

    3. Infer that the area of a parallelogram = Base x Height, and use the formula.

    4. Find the area of the shaded parallelogram by subtracting the area of two triangles from a rectangle.

    5. Identify the base and height of the given parallelograms to find the areas.

    6. Find the areas of composite figures made up of rectangles, triangles and/or parallelograms.

  1. Surface Area

    1. Find the number of faces of prisms and pyramids.

    2. Form a net of a rectangular prism. Find the area of each face and the total area of all the faces to find the total surface area.

    3. Find the total surface area of a rectangular prism.

    4. Find the total surface area of a cube.

    5. Find the surface area of cuboids and cubes.

SCIENCE: Students this week discovered the power of simple machines. They were introduced to the basic simple machines with a few brainpop videos. Next they worked with a seesaw and moved around the fulcrum in different challenges. Then they had the chance to use a pulley in order to race a car across a table. Finally they created popsicle catapults and launched cotton balls across the lab tables. Next week we will continue our exploration of simple machines.-Mike
