5th Grade Week of 1/8/18

Hello 5th Grade Families! What a week in 5th Grade! We had our India Pavilion, which was a smashing success! We attended a Lower School tekes about Martin Luther King, Jr., participated in kindness activities during Advisory, and like every week, tackled new and challenging materials with curiosity and enthusiasm. Please enjoy the teacher updates below, and have a wonderful weekend!

HUMANITIES: I am so very proud of our students for all the hard work and dedication they put into the India Pavilion. They spent a month and a half researching and putting together their amazing projects, and blew everyone away with their incredible performance on Tuesday. I, along with the whole Senesh Community, want to congratulated them on their wonderful work!-Tony

MATH: Students should be coming home with a packet of their work from the first semester! Please ask them to show you if you are interested in seeing how much they have progressed as math students so far this year. This week, 5th graders learned to find fraction of a measurement, mixed number measurements, and fraction of a whole. We are close to finishing Unit 3 (fractions) and the unit test is currently scheduled for January 24th and 25th.-Kelly

JUDAICS:

This week we finished learning about the first Aliyah and did a reenactment of the move to Palestine. We were in our “families” and we found out different scenarios that were happening to us by picking out of a hat.We made” wine” and wrote diary entries. A lot was happening in our new home of Palestine. Some of the situations that occurred were malaria, marriage and some people even decided to move to America because life was hard in Palestine. We ended with the celebration of the two marriages and danced the Hora. I’m really looking forward to learning more about this time period and hearing how the next Aliyah went. This week we also learned about the part of the Joseph story where his brothers plotted to kill him. We reflected on how the brothers could have treated Joseph better and we related it to how it would feel when others are talking about you and you feel left out. It is kind of funny because I always learned that the brothers were pure evil but now it is interesting to see that the situation is more complicated. This week was a total blast!” – Tamar

“This week we pretended to be people making Aliyah around 1882. We went through what it would have been like for them when they made the decision to make Aliyah and how it was then they got to Palestine. I realized how hard it would have been for them at this time. We also got new chevrutas in Chumash and learned more about the Joseph story. I found it interesting that Joseph didn’t realize that the brothers were planning to kill him. It made me think that Joseph could have been more aware and maybe he could have thought about the situation more before entering into a dangerous situation. He was probably just excited that the brothers were calling him the “dream master”, and didn’t think that maybe they had bad intentions and were making fun of him”. –Sara

SCIENCE: Students this week in science continued with their discoveries of magnetism. Last week they used iron filings to discover this invisible magnetic field. This week they learned how the Earth’s magnetic field makes a compass work. Then using strong magnets they manipulated the compass. Next week we will continue our exploration of magnetism by building custom electromagnets. The start of the new year has been exciting in fifth grade science!-Mike
