5th Grade Week of 12/4

HUMANITIES: What a week! We are making amazing progress with our India Pavilion Projects. We are researching, writing, and creating our final products. We can’t wait to blow everyone away on Jan. 9th! We also are continuing our study of Homeless Bird. We are having robust discussions on topics ranging from character traits to symbolism to Indian marriage customs. Students are incredibly enthusiastic about this text, and are making amazing progress with their reading comprehension. Shabbat Shalom, stay warm!-Tony

JUDAICS:

Eliska: “This week we learned about Joseph’s dreams. We talked about the reactions from the brothers. We saw in the text that they were jealous. Usually the brothers ignored him and the text says they hate him. I think they are feeling jealous now and not just hatred because it keeps going on and on and they are seeing so many examples of him being better than them so they are figuring out that they hate him because of the jealousy they feel. We also learned to decipher Rashi script. I thought that once you got the hang of it, it got easier, but in the beginning it was hard. We learned how to ask Kushiyot (text based questions). We practiced asking these questions on the nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill”. I’m excited to make my own Kushiyot on the Joseph text!”

Sadie: “This week we learned about how Joseph bragged about his dream and how in the second one he took it too far. We learned how to decode Rashi text which is written in a different font in the Chumash. Rashi is a commentator who explains parts of the text. He taught us that even though Rachel was Joseph’s mother, Bilha actually raised him because Rachel died. Rashi pointed out that when Joseph is talking about the sun and moon bowing down which we understand is symbolizing his mother and father, he is actually referring to Bilhah. It helped us understand that Joseph was not trying to offend anyone or upset his father, he was just excited to tell everyone about what he dreamt. On Friday we used a nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill” to practice asking Kushiyot (text based questions) and we all got silly names that would be our Rabbi names.”

Shabbat Shalom,

Laura

MATH: This week, the 5th graders started unit three:fractions! We started the unit with reviewing fraction concepts (equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and comparing fractions), understanding the relationship between fractions and division, and adding unlike fractions. I am also very excited to spend the rest of the year with the fifth graders!-Kelly

SCIENCE: Students started this week to explore a new concept in science called buoyancy. They review a video from “BrainPop” that help explain the concept. Then students started building custom boats in order to discovery next week if their models will float in a test lake. Working with the previous concept of air resistance they also created sails in order to discover if a fan will move their boats across the test lake. We look forward to next week’s experiment to discover the outcome of these boat designs.-Mike

HEBREW: This week after strengthening and practicing conjugating the form of שלמים to past tense we started to focus on the irregular forms of ע”ו, ע” י, ל”ה and how they are conjugated to past tense .
Students learned and practiced how to identify the different forms in words and sentences. Shabbat shalom-Yehuda
