5th Grade Week of 1/22

Hello 5th Grade Families! Please see our class updates below. Have a wonderful weekend!

HUMANITIES: In Humanities this week, we continued our study of Tuck Everlasting, exploring themes such as immortality, free will, and right vs. wrong. We debated and discussed these themes, and wrote extensively about them as well. In Social Studies, we explored the early dynasties of China, including the changes and developments over time between dynasties, and the life of the controversial emperor Shi Huang Di. Shabbat Shalom!-Tony

JUDAICS:

“This week we studied more of the Joseph story. We had a full- class discussion about why people do bad things. For the debate, we wrote proof from the text about why people do bad things and wrote the citiation down. We used the “bad things” that the characters did as examples and found proof about what might have motivated them. Laura put cards on the floor with things that we could ask the person who read aloud their notecard. They were fill in the blanks, like “That is a valid point, but in my opinion _______.” It was a lot of fun! We had a Judaics test about shoreshim and words from the text. All in all, in was an awesome week and I can’t wait to read the rest of the Joseph story!” –Abby

This week we had a test about grammar and key words we are learning in the Joseph Torah story. We studied by finding the words in different forms in the Chumash.  We also had a discussion about why do people do bad things. We had cards on the floor that helped us get into conversation with each other and know what to say to others to keep the conversation going. On our test we also had shoreshim (Root words). The test wasn’t that hard in my opinion. This week was a lot of fun!- Shaine

MATH: 5th graders have successfully finished unit three, “Fractions,” this week and will begin learning their fourth unit, “Multiply and Divide Fractions.” In this unit they will learn to find product of fractions, divide a fraction by a whole number, divide a fraction or a whole number by a fraction, and solve multi-step word problems.-Kelly

Hebrew

This week 5th grade learned about two important figures in Israeli history, Yitzchak Rabin and Golda Meir. Students analyzed the text using the color coding system they learned. In addition, students learned time phrases and created their school schedule in Hebrew.

HEBREW:

הורים יקרים,

השבוע המשכנו לעבוד על ספורט, קראנו מאמר של אוהד ספורט תוך חיזוק אוצר המילים והכתיבה. על מנת לערוך השוואה בין הטקסטים שקראנו בנושא הספורט למדנו מילות השוואה וניגוד וערכנו תרגילים שונים בכדי לסייע לתלמידים להשתמש בהם במשפטים.

סוף שבוע נעים,

אילנה

SCIENCE: Students this week in science discovered the properties of the electromagnetic spectrum. With the knowledge that light comes in the form of waves they conducted an experiment in order to discover which material can block different kinds of light. Within the four stations they used the same materials to discover possible shields from visible light, ultraviolet light, infrared heat, and infrared remote. They had an enjoyable time being surprised about what materials really shielded them from these different forms of light.-Mike
