5th Grade Week of 12/15

Happy Hanukkah, 5th Grade Community!  We had so much fun celebrating the first days of Hanukkah with each other and our buddies! Here is an update on what we’ve been up to this week:

HUMANITIES: This week in Humanities, students continued to do amazing work on their India Pavilion Projects. This includes working on their writing pieces, activities, and trifolds, which they were so excited to get! We also continued our deep dive into Homeless Bird; we had rich discussions about topics such as widow’s lives in India, systemic poverty, and how we can be kinder to those less fortunate us during this season of giving and kindness. I hope everyone has a happy Hanukkah and a restful weekend!-Tony

JUDAICS:

“We started the dart game in competition with the 6th grade. We get points from hitting a Chanukkah themed board. We heard parts of the Book of Macabees and a packet about Hanukkah. We are learning about the two miracles of Hanukkah and learning how people had different opinions about which miracle was more important. We are trying to figure out which one we think is more important. We learned the Gemara about Hanukkah. We got to watch the Maccabeats and 613 Hanukkah Youtube videos. We lit candles and played dreidle with our buddies. I really enjoyed learning the different ideas from the Gemara and the book of Maccabees and hearing which miracle they found important. Happy Hanukkah!”

“We started our Hanukkah Unit. We learned about different sources that focused on different miracles of Hanukkah. The two miracles are the War against the Greeks and the Oil lasting 8 days. We are working on this packet leading up to the “Great Nes Debate”. So far i think the war is the most important miracle to publicize. I like that the War invlived people trying their hardest to win. The oil was just the aftermath of the war, it wouldn’t have been able to happen if they didn’t win the war.  We are working on paragraphs about what miracles are in general. We reflected on what we thought a miracle was and if we ever experienced one and we interviewed someone else to hear about their miracles.”

MATH: This week, the 5th graders added and subtracted unlike fractions and mixed numbers. Next week, we will review and complete previous assignment corrections and get ready for our winter break! Happy Hanukkah!-Kelly

HEBREWThis week the fifth grad strengthened conjugating verbs from past to present and from present to past through writing and performing skits.

SCIENCE: Students finished building their custom boats in science. We came together as a class to test each boat to see if it could float, hold an eraser, then move when wind was applied. Optionally students were allowed to add mass to the boat to see how much it can hold before it sinks. We will conclude our exploration of the concepts buoyancy and density next week.-Mike
