5th Grade Week of 12/1

Hi 5th grade parents!

This was a great week in 5th grade. We changed up how we do recess and now there is a designated area for large group games and an area for smaller group hang outs and games. We are now doing recess with the 6th graders. In advisory we practiced mindfulness based on the idea of spreading happiness. We also got “spiritual chevrutas” who we will share ideas with during mindfulness advisory. In Thursday advisory we continued our work with our Empathy and Kindness unit. We did a project from the Wonder initiative called #choosekind. Students wrote about a time someone was kind to them and then imagined what the world would look like if that kindness kept spreading.

Shabbat Shalom,

5th grade team

HUMANITIES: In Humanities this week, students began researching their India Pavilion topics. They are so excited, and dove into their research with determination and enthusiasm! In Reading, we began Homeless Bird, by Gloria Whelan, and discussed home life and arranged marriages in India. I hope everyone had a relaxing Thanksgiving, and that we all have a wonderful weekend.-Tony

JUDAICS:

“This week we studied for our test on Friday that was on all the Biblical grammar we learned so far this year. We learned about Joseph and how the brothers hate for him grew even more when they heard about his dreams. We talked about how hate starts and how it can affect us and our relationships with others. This was very interesting to learn about both of Joseph’s dreams and the impact they had on his brothers and even Dad. I enjoyed doing this work all on google classroom”   –By Dahlia Sussman

“This week we translated what happened with Joseph and his brothers when Joseph was explaining his dream about being the highest sheave of wheat and the 11 other sheaves bowed down to him. I thought it was fun to translate this and figure out what the dream was about. I think this dream is telling us that in the future Joseph will be the one standing high with the brothers bowing down to him. I have a feeling this is what is going to happen. In my opinion it also makes sense that he is now getting “bullied” but will be able to grow from the experience and learn to stand up for himself. I think most of the time the person who gets bullied as a kid can make them stronger because they learn to take care of things and stand up for themselves and I think Joseph will do this. I know the brothers felt angry and thought this dream showed he was being selfish and not humble. I think one day the brothers will understand this dream and forgive Joseph. We had our quiz on Friday which was fun but challenging. -By Emma Honore

SCIENCE: Students conducted an experiment in order to see how gravity affects the creation of craters in sand. They had to drop four different objects at a fix height and measure the diameter of the craters produced in the sand. These students worked together in order to produce accurate data results. We continue to model the scientific method and the power of collaboration during data collection.-Mike
