What a week! Our students came back from their long weekend, and did an excellent job as always of showing off their academic skills and love of learning! Please enjoy the updates below, and have a good weekend!

We also studied ancient and medieval Chinese inventions, and students came up with their own world-changing inventions as well. Have a great weekend!-Tony

JUDAICS:

“This week we learned more of the Joseph story and translated the text about the brothers planning to kill Joseph. We thought about the questions, “Why do people do bad things”. I think people do bad things to put themselves up and feel better about themselves. I think the brothers wanted to do something bad because Joseph was annoying to them and they were jealous. I thought it was such a mean plan and they should have just gone to Joseph and told him to stop annoying them. We learned about what a bystander and an up-stander is. A bystander is someone who just lets things happen and doesn’t get involved and an up stander is someone who does something about a problem they see. We learned about this because one of the brothers Reuben acted as an up stander when he saved Joseph from his other brothers plan. I think it was really brave of Reuben. I would have been nervous if I was Reuben because I would have thought they might try to kill me too!. Shabbat Shalom.” – Maya

“This week, as we were studying the situation with Joseph and his brothers, we saw a social study about bystanders and how people are more likely to not act and help someone if they are in a group. This is because they think someone else will step up and do it, or they feel weird going against the norm of the group. If you are alone, the study says you will help them because no one else is around to do it. I think this is really interesting because at first I thought that if there are more people it would be more likely that you would be helped. However, I see that this shows us to stand up and be a strong individual even when in a group.. Its scary to think that people could be getting into a fight and there will be other people just passing by thinking that someone else will take care of it. I do think though that sometimes even if you want to be an up-stander it is out of your control because of the situation. I am glad that Reuven stood up for his brother and I am excited to see what happens with his plan.” — Yakira

HEBREW: This week the 5th grade learned about “Touro” the oldest synagogue in North America. Students watched an interview with the congregations current rabbi and read a text  on the  history of the synagogue. After analyzing the text students had a reading comprehension activity on the material.
In addition students enjoyed having fun activities with our shin shin shinim, they played Israeli board games and did really fun assignments! Shabbat shalom-Yehuda

SCIENCE: Students this week in science continued with their discoveries of magnetism. They learned about the differences between electromagnets and magnets by building their own electromagnet. Focusing on the concept that an electromagnet can be turned on and off they conducted a friendly magnetism race! Students took memories away from this race and connected the experience with the fact electromagnets can be turned on and off.-Mike
