6th Grade News: 4/9 – 4/13/18

HUMANITIES This week in History class, students embarked on an imaginary “field trip” back in time to visit the Minoan civilization of ancient Greece. We examined the frescoes (paintings on plaster) that they left behind, drawing inferences about their culture and values. We also watched a video that showed the fascinating ruins of their palace in Knossos, on the island of Crete, and took notes on the Minoans’ lifestyle, religion, and relationship with surrounding people. In Literature, students discussed the endings of their “Coming of Age” novels, Goodbye Stranger and The Wednesday Wars. To culminate our unit, students are completing a podcast project related...

Day 3: Friday, April 13th: blog from Laurel and Sara

We started our day at 6:30 to pray, then soon after we got on the bus. The bus ride was one hour to get to an archaeological dig site. At the dig site we dug up dirt from over 2,000 years ago and found shards of pottery that used to either be plates, cups or bowls. We went into tunnels from thousands of years ago, and one tunnel had candles to light the way. In the tunnels we went into there were holes from where the people used to raise pigeons for sacrifice, food, and fertilizer (We are sure you...

April 13 – The Science of Bridges!

Dear Third Grade Families, Welcome back! After a week off from school, students have been back at it — working on bar modeling, writing, the Brooklyn Bridge and book clubs. Math: We started our return by reviewing addition and subtraction bar models. One student mentioned that bar models are used to help us organize word problems, and help us know what type of math we need to do. After that, we inferred what a multiplication bar model would look like based on strategies we already know. A multiplication bar model is a mix between drawing a picture of equal groups...

Reading This week both reading groups finished their books! Each group completed a special activity that relates to a part of their book. One group created a chalk garden, based on their book The Chalk Box Kid, and the other group made Kasha Varnishkes based on a part of their book, The Adventures of Ali Baba Bernstein. Then, each group member paired up with one from the other reading group and they talked about their final activities, and discussed each of their books. We have so enjoyed reading these wonderful books, and can’t wait to start new books soon!...

First Grade News

This week first grade writers got serious about series writing! They practiced “showing not telling,” including chapters, and adding patterns to elevate their writing. Each first grader has published at least one book in their series, and we look forward to reading the second and third installments!   In Math we learned to tell time to the hour and half hour. First graders practiced reading clocks, played “what time is it?” BINGO, and made their own practice clocks.   In Social Studies we have been preparing for Earth Day. We’ve learned all about neighborhoods and communities, and now it is...
